Create the necessary environmental conditions for the permanent establishment of Bearded Vulture specimens present in the mountainous environment of Picos de Europa (ZEPA).

Specific objectives:
1. Integrate the Bearded Vulture conservation programs into the annual plans that are developed by the Master Use and Management Plan (P.R.U.G.) of the National Park of Picos de Europa.

2. Adapt the Bearded Vulture conservation actions of the National Park of Picos de Europa to the recommendations of the Strategy for the Conservation of the Bearded Vulture in Spain.

Specialist of the Foundation for the Conservation of the Bearded Vulture (FCQ) performing investigation tasks.
Two conservationist NGOs in charge of field care are permanently working in the Picos de Europa, and they periodically report on the main threats to the fauna and their habitats. Moreover, the regional and central administrations, through their guardianship, offer information about the environmental status of the Picos de Europa, which will serve to orient the conservation actions planned in the project.

There is no new risk known that could negatively interact with the species in the Picos de Europa, given that the main cause of the historic ebb of this species, which was direct persecution, has been completely neutralised through the new concept of hunting, which is compatible with the species, as it occurs in the Pyrenees, where hunting and conservation of the Bearded Vulture have been in place for 5 years, with optimum conservation results.

This project contemplates the recommendations of the strategy for the conservation of the bearded vulture in Spain, the PRUG will to promote the restoration of bearded vultures in Picos de Europa national park and the dispersive tendency of the specie from the Pyrenees to the Spanish west. In order to do it, sustainable actions of management and improvement of the habitat are suggested, aimed at providing the final settlement of this specie through the creation of territorial bonds of the young specimens with the selected zones (decoys and nets installation). So, we think that the combined action of techniques that stimulate this settlement and a wide and tough social work, which promotes the popular acceptation of this bird of prey and the progressive implication of certain sectors in its restoration, is necessary.

It is a specialised and territorial scavenger bird (osteophage) tied to the mountain areas, which takes advantage of the winds that originate in the mountainous systems in order to be able to exploit the enormous areas that make up its territories.

It reproduces annually, thereby overcoming a long reproductive cycle, as well as juvenile dependence. It has low reproductive success, whereby reproduction fails in half of the pairs, and the rest produce only a single chick per year. [...]

The National Park of the Picos de Europa, at 64,660 ha, is an area of great importance for the birds, whose ecology and distribution are associated with high mountain areas.

The Picos de Europa constitute the most prominent mountainous unit of the Cantabrian Range, and from a biogeographical point of view, it is located in the Atlantic region, in the Province of Orocantábrica, the Ubiñense-picoeuropeano sector and the Picoeuropeo sub-sector. [...]
