he recent start-up of the “Recovery of the Bearded Vulture in the Peaks of Europe” LIFE project in July 2002, meant that new headquarters had to be opened in the area of the National Park of the Peaks of Europe.

The town of Merodio (Asturias) was chosen for its location. This town is situated in the Oriente region, within the district of Peñamellera Baja, and very close to its administrative capital, Panes, broadly known for its tourist interest.

It is, therefore, the place of reference for this project and from which direct contact is established with the medium and the inhabitants of the territory, which is so necessary in endangered species conservation programmes. This is the place of contact with the different public administrations responsible for managing the species in the Autonomous Communities of Cantabria, Asturias and Castilla-Leon, through the National Park of the Peaks of Europe, co-managed by the Ministry of the Environment.
At these headquarters, the different plans of actions are prepared, whose common objective is to create the necessary environmental conditions to permanently establish the specimens of bearded vultures present in the mountainous area of the Peaks of Europe, where the species disappeared more or less in the fifties.
