| The mountains
of the Bearded Vulture |
 |
|
he
bearded vulture is still
extensively distributed
in some mountains of Europe,
Asia and Africa.
The sub-species Gypaetus
barbatus barbatus
is the most extended and
is found in the main mountain
ranges of Eurasia and
North Africa, occupying
some cincur-Mediterranean
mountains (Pyrenees, Alps,
Balkans, Asia Minor and
Atlas), extending to the
east through mountains
in the south-west of Arabia,
Caucasus, Iran, Pakistan,
to the large mountain
ranges of Central Asia
(Hindu-khus, Himalayas,
Pamir, Tien-Shan and Altai…)

On
the other hand, the Gypaetus
barbatus meridionalis,
also exists, which can be found
in some mountains in the south
and east of Africa, mainly in
Ethiopia and South Africa (Drackensberg
Mountain range), as well as
in some isolated mountainous
enclaves of Kenya, Tanzania
and Uganda. Its distribution
coincides to a great extent
with that of the different species
of the Caprinae genres, which
are the basis of its food. In
general, the best populations
of bearded vultures are found
in remote areas where it has
not been pursued and affected
by poisoned baits. It is also
very important for the mountains
to maintain populations of wild
ungulates and domestic cattle. |
