ALPS

In 1986 the first specimens were released in Rauris (Austria), Haute-Savoie (France), l’Engadine (Switzerland) and Mercantour-Argentera (Italy). Since then, until the year 2001, a total of 110 specimens were released, and 65 to 69 specimens are recorded to still be alive. In 1997 the project had 100 captive specimens and 25 reproduction centres. The first couple was formed in 1990 (Austria) and the first lay took place in winter 1995/96. It was not successful. On the contrary in winter 1996/97 the first chick was born and it finally flew successfully (High Savoy). The re-introduction is advancing satisfactorily and now (2004) there are a dozen couples in freedom in reproduction age and others in formation. In the four Alpine countries, the reproductive units have been installed inside or close to the National Reserves and Parks (Vanoise, Hohe Tauern, Stelvio, Engadine), where important populations of Capra ibex exist.

Where to see the Bearded Vulture in Alps:

Hohe Tauern National Park (Austria). This park is in an Alpine area in the south of Austria, which extends about 110 km. between Zilletal and the Italian border to the west and the Katschberg pass to the east. The park has a surface area of 1800 km2, and is the second largest in Europe.

Valle de Rauris en los Alpes austriacos (FCQ)
National Park of Vanoise (France). This National Park is located in the department of Savoy in the south-east of France and borders with the Gran Paradiso National Park in Italy. It was the first national park to be declared in France.
Stelvio National Park (Italy). This park is in the north-west of the Ortles mountains, in the north of Italy and close to the border with Switzerland. There is an Alpine pass some 2756 m away, which is one of the highest mountain passes in Europe. It is the largest Italian national park.
Engadine (Switzerland). This valley is situated in the Graubunden canton, in the south-east of Switzerland between Austria to the north and Italy to the south. It is one of the most popular tourist regions in Switzerland. It is called the Swiss National Park and was the first to be created in Europe (1914). Many areas of the park are inaccessible in winter.
