| In
1986 the first specimens were
released in Rauris (Austria),
Haute-Savoie (France), l’Engadine
(Switzerland) and Mercantour-Argentera
(Italy). Since then, until the
year 2001, a total of 110 specimens
were released, and 65 to 69 specimens
are recorded to still be alive.
In 1997 the project had 100 captive
specimens and 25 reproduction
centres. The first couple was
formed in 1990 (Austria) and the
first lay took place in winter
1995/96. It was not successful.
On the contrary in winter 1996/97
the first chick was born and it
finally flew successfully (High
Savoy). The re-introduction is
advancing satisfactorily and now
(2004) there are a dozen couples
in freedom in reproduction age
and others in formation. In the
four Alpine countries, the reproductive
units have been installed inside
or close to the National Reserves
and Parks (Vanoise, Hohe Tauern,
Stelvio, Engadine), where important
populations of Capra ibex exist. |
