t
could be found at the
start of the 19th century
on the main mountains
of the centre and south
of the old continent,
but at the beginning of
the 20th century it had
already disappeared in
the Alps and later it
disappeared from other
mountain ranges of the
Iberian Peninsula, Balkans
and Mediterranean islands:
Sardinia and Sicily. It
was hunted in the Alps
until it disappeared altogether.
In 1978 a breeding programme
in captivity was started
up and the first three
captive couples were formed.
