In
the Caucasus, it is present
in the Russian Federation, Georgia,
Azerbaijan and Armenia, estimating
a population of 110-115 nesting
couples. They have been observed
at heights of between 600 and
4760 m above sea level. The
nests are situated at between
800 and 2220 m, preferably facing
the East and Southeast. The
eggs are laid in January and
the chicks are born in March,
flying in June or July. The
main conservation problems are
the illegal hunting of specimens
(11 cases) and death by poisoning
(12 cases) (period 1973-1996).
The wild ungulates of the species
(Capra cylindricornis), (Capra
caucásica), (Capra aegargus)
and especially the Chamois (Rupicapra
rupicapra) are extremely important
for the diet of the populations
in this area.
