EAST OF AFRICA

The mountains on the Rift fault, which cross the majority of the East of Africa, house the largest population of the southern subspecies. Ethiopia together with Eritrea house the largest number of couples, estimating about 1430, and occupying a surface area of 240,000 m2 over 2000 m above sea level. The Simien mountains in the north of Abyssinia and the Bale Mounts to the south, are the areas with the largest number. In Kenya the Aberdares, Marsabit, Elgon and Mount Kenya have already been mentioned. It seems that the five known couples in Mount Kenya have disappeared, as well as in Hell’s Gate close to the Nakuru lake where a reintroduction programme is being carried out. In Tanzania the bearded vulture has been mentioned in the mountainous massifs of Kilimanjaro and the area around the Ngorongoro Crater close to Arusha where recent mentions have been made. The presence of bearded vultures has also been mentioned in other countries crossed by the Rift fault such as Sudan and Uganda.

Where to see the Bearded Vulture in East of Africa:

Simien National Park
.- Here is the highest peak in Ethiopia and the fourth highest of the continent, Ras Degen (4620m). The park was created to protect the ibex (Capra ibex wali) and the rare Simien wolf (Canis simensis) is present. The wood disappears at 3300 m and grazing lands appear with giant lobelias. The park is 100 kilometres from Gondar and the Geech abyss is one of the best observation points for the bearded vulture.
Bale Mounts National Park.- This is located on a high plateau, which rises up to 4000 m. comprised of old volcanic rocks and with various rounded mountainous peaks, the highest of which rises to 4377 m. (Tullu Deemtu). It is an area with the largest extension of afroalpine habitat of the continent and of great importance for the Simien wolf and the Nyala mountain antelope (Tragelaphus buxtoni).
Kilimanjaro National Park.- The park is located at more than 2700 m above seal level and it has three extinct volcanoes: Kibo, the highest summit of the continent (5896 metres), Mawenzi (5149 metres); and Shira (3962 metres). In spite of only being 330 kilometres to the south of the equator, it still maintains glaciers in a declining phase. The Shira plateau is the place where a couple of bearded vultures are frequently observed.
