Peña Montañesa
Nature Refuge is located
in the region of Sobrarbe
(province of Huesca), within
the limits of the municipality
of Pueyo de Araguas. It
has a surface area of about
3000 ha. and houses part
of the Cotiella-Sierra Ferrera
massif, the geological unit
which forms part of the
Inner Pyrenean Mountain
Range. |
 |
| The
man – nature
interaction has determined
an interesting mosaic
of habitats, which
house a great diversity
of flora and fauna. |

|
|
 |
| The
secular and balanced man-nature
interaction in this sector has
determined, together with the
great microclimatic, topographic
and altitudinal diversity, an
interesting mosaic of habitats
that also house a great diversity
of flora and fauna. |

|
The conservation
of this great biodiversity
led, in the year 2001, to
the Cotiellal – Sierra
Ferrera massif being declared
as a Special Bird Protection
Zone and a Local Place of
Interest (LPI),
thus being included in the
Natura 2000 Network
(European network whose
main objective is the conservation
of biodiversity through
sustainable management of
the natural resources).

| Close
to the reserve the LPI
of Sierra de Arro (locally
better known as Sierra de Araguas
and Soto) is worth a mention.
This place houses a good example
of a pine grove with black pine,
which is quite scarce in the rest
of Europe. |
