Location
he Peña Montañesa Nature Refuge is located in the region of Sobrarbe (province of Huesca), within the limits of the municipality of Pueyo de Araguas. It has a surface area of about 3000 ha. and houses part of the Cotiella-Sierra Ferrera massif, the geological unit which forms part of the Inner Pyrenean Mountain Range.
The man – nature interaction has determined an interesting mosaic of habitats, which house a great diversity of flora and fauna.
The secular and balanced man-nature interaction in this sector has determined, together with the great microclimatic, topographic and altitudinal diversity, an interesting mosaic of habitats that also house a great diversity of flora and fauna.
The conservation of this great biodiversity led, in the year 2001, to the Cotiellal – Sierra Ferrera massif being declared as a Special Bird Protection Zone and a Local Place of Interest (LPI), thus being included in the Natura 2000 Network (European network whose main objective is the conservation of biodiversity through sustainable management of the natural resources).

Close to the reserve the LPI of Sierra de Arro (locally better known as Sierra de Araguas and Soto) is worth a mention. This place houses a good example of a pine grove with black pine, which is quite scarce in the rest of Europe.
