Flora and vegetation

n the Nature refuge, we can find plants that are typical of very different worlds: on the one hand, in the high areas and shady slopes, we can find plants of Euro-Siberian and Alpine origin, and in the lowest and sunny parts, typical Mediterranean species. The perfect finish to this varied flora is provided by the very many Pyrenean endemisms present in the Peña: Borderea pyrenaica, Veronica aragonensis, Linaria glauca subsp. bubanii and Odontites pyrenaeus.

Kermes oak
In the sunny part of the Peña one of the best kermes oak groves of the region can be found. The gall oaks occupy the more humid part of these slopes and sometimes form small woods, which give a touch of colour to the landscape in autumn. The understory of these formations is dominated by bushy species such as the box, the dill and the bear berry.
In the shade, the humidity conditions favour the development of woods dominated by more Atlantic species, such as the black pine, the fir and the beech. Scattered here and there we can find other trees such as the yew and the holly.

Above the limit of the wood, the landscape is dominated by Pyrenean hedgehog (Echinospartum horridum) and box thicket, high mountain meadows, stony slopes and large rocky escarpments.

The rocky escarpments and the gravel areas form a very peculiar habitat, which, in spite of its inhospitable aspect, is the only place where “the climbers” of the vegetal kingdom can survive, rupicula plants such as the bear’s ear and the asparagus trefoil.
