he
fauna of the Peña
is a faithful reflection
of what occurs with its
flora: an interesting
and varied contingent
of species of mammals,
birds and invertebrates
populate this varied mosaic
of habitats: woods, groves,
rocky walls, meadows,
crops.
The
rocky escarpments act
as a refuge for one of
the most emblematic species
of the Pyrenees: the bearded
vulture. This
large vulture, together
with the griffon
vulture, take
advantage of the warm
(thermal) air currents
close to the calcareous
walls to make their displacements.
The golden eagle,
the peregrine
falcon, the wallcreeper
and a long etcetera can
be found in these places.
The
holm oak and gall oak
woods house birds such
as the wood pigeon,
the grey-necked
nightjar, the
blue woodcreeper
and birds of prey such
as the goshawk,
the booted eagle
and the short-toed
eagle Among the
mammals we can highlight
the garden dormouse,
the genet,
the badger
and the wild boar.
In the woods of the shade
of the Peña other
ornithological rarities
live: we are talking about
the magnificent grouse
and the cryptic tengmalm’s
owl.
Close to
the fields and villages,
in this peculiar environment,
modelled more intensely
by man, such attractive
birds as the European
bee-eater or
curious ones such as the
woodchat shrike
can be found. Birds of
prey such as the common
buzzard or the
red kite
fly over these fields
in search of prey. Many
of the wood mammals make
night incursions into
this habitat to supplement
their forest diet. |
